ORC technology stands for Organic Rankine Cycle. Turboden uses ORC technology to generate both electrical energy and heat through renewable heat resources such as biomass, geothermal, and solar energy. It can also generate electricity from waste heat harnessed from industrial processes as well as reciprocating engines and turbines. In 2009, the American company, Pratt & Whitney (United Technologies Corporation) purchased a majority stake of Turboden. Turboden’s line of ORC products fully complement the PureCycle ® ORC system manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Power Systems Division. Since its founding in 1980, Turboden has emerged as one of the global leaders in technology that converts waste heat from renewable resources into electricity Creating ORC Turbogenerators that always perform better and last longer is not only a technological accomplishment, it is also a reflection of the company’s mission — to promote generation of renewable energy, and cost-efficiency, in line with European Directives and current global best practices. What is causing my furnace vent pipe fan to cycle on and off every couple seconds?

January 30th, 2012

Question by BN: What is causing my furnace vent pipe fan to cycle on and off every couple seconds?

The furnace is a 90% unit. When I open the face, I can see the vent pipe blower or whatever it’s called, and I can hear it switch on and off every 2-3 seconds.
Yeah, it is the draft inducer blower. It is a Fasco. It is definitely hot on the front, but it’s been running every 5 seconds for a while now.

Q&A: My heat pump not running. HELP!?

January 30th, 2012

Question by : My heat pump not running. HELP!?

it is Carrier 38YCC030-300. about 10yrs old. it is simply not running since turned thermometer to heat this year. air handler works fine but with cool air coming out obviously. i have already had/paid 2 service companies to check it up(, ).

1st guy said outside unit/heat pump is fine but thermostat could be bad OR the wire from thermo to heat pump is dead/bited out by animal in attic. would have to charge hundreds $$ to diagnose/fix them. when i pushed for one cause – he said its thermostat. i replaced with my old/mechanical thermo but the problem not go away.

2nd guy came today and he said its freon leakage (did add freon in the summer) that lead high pressure switch shut off the heat pump… and the switch itself seems bad too as it does not reset. when he bypassed the switch the heat pump started running (i saw that). so he initially suggested to replace the system (with $$$ of course) since the suspected leakage in coil is not repairable since they could get parts to run on R22 anymore. later he gave an option to replace the pressure switch and add freon for 0+.

so now i am stuck with what to do. i tend to go with 2nd guy’s opinion/option – replace pressure switch + add freon. any advices/suggestions from someone with expertise/experience? thanks in advance.
Chris
Thank you all so much for advices/opinions!

The problem solved for now. Instead of calling “established” Service Contractors, this time I called a small contractor (3rd guy ^^) and told him the 2nd guy’s diagnosis. Over the phone this guy insisted the pressure switch should not be dead even though freon leakage might well be the issue. He came to find there was very little freon in the system and noticed a wire to the pressure switch left detached (by 2nd guy purposely? ^^). While he was adding freon, the heat pump started defrosting (i did not know that ^^) then running fine with warm air coming out of register. He also recommended to replace the whole system over replacing the leaking coil as the former causes more but carries 10yr warranty. I might do so within the year to receive 00 tax credit.

I might call the 1st guy’s company asking for refund of their “diagnosis” fee. You guys are great. Thanks again.

If you called two folks from HVAC companies to come out and look and you do not believe them, why would you believe anyone on this forum whose credentials you have no idea about?
