A heap of firewood, a mess of snow.

Looking out of my backdoor, iPhone capture.

In this part of Texas, not everyone has natural gas for heating their homes. Some people have propane, but we don’t. We have a super high efficiency heat pump and our electric bills are incredibly low all year round, however a heat pump performs poorly when it dips below 30 degrees.

I’m glad we stocked up on firewood early this year. We have a cast iron stove in the living room that keeps our entire house warm, without the need for any other heat source.

I designed our home using a CAD program I had and our walls are not typical 2 x 4 studs. We used 2 x 6 studs and have monster-deep walls with blown-in insulation. The floor is insulated and we have 20 inches of insulation in the attic… So the house stays toasty warm in the winter, and oh-so cool in the summer, even here in Texas.

Q&A: Does anyone have and personal knowledge of “packaged unit” Heat pumps?

September 1st, 2010

Question by titus1971: Does anyone have and personal knowledge of “packaged unit” Heat pumps?

I’ve had several recent quotes to install a heat pump in my home and several of the companies have quoted a packaged unit instead of a seperate outdoor unit and indoor air handler. I didn’t know if this was a new trend or if it was more cost efficient since I’m putting this in a home that doesn’t currently have anytime of central air/heat pump/furnace. Any input would be appreciated.

Installing a heat pump depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin we DO NOT install heat pumps beacuse they just dont work in our weather. If you need further assistance please email us at monroemechanical@yahoo.com We are an HVACR company.
