In this part of Texas, not everyone has natural gas for heating their homes. Some people have propane, but we don’t. We have a super high efficiency heat pump and our electric bills are incredibly low all year round, however a heat pump performs poorly when it dips below 30 degrees.
I’m glad we stocked up on firewood early this year. We have a cast iron stove in the living room that keeps our entire house warm, without the need for any other heat source.
I designed our home using a CAD program I had and our walls are not typical 2 x 4 studs. We used 2 x 6 studs and have monster-deep walls with blown-in insulation. The floor is insulated and we have 20 inches of insulation in the attic… So the house stays toasty warm in the winter, and oh-so cool in the summer, even here in Texas.
