My a/c heat pump will not blow cold air?

August 31st, 2010

Question by TX7: My a/c heat pump will not blow cold air?

I set my thermostat at 75 and the coldest it will get in the house is 82. Already tried to reset circuit breakers. I got a new air filter and removed it. There is a shrub is slightly blocking one side of unit. I have a honeywell thermostat and an amana 13 seer heat pump. Do I need a new thermostat or to fix the a/c unit?

looks like you need some freeon put in it. thats not something you or i could get either. you have to be licensed. so call a heating and air cond. company in your area and they can come out and charge it back up.

Heat Pumps on Scary Rooftops!

August 30th, 2010

Scary Rooftop HVAC in the Phoenix, AZ area. Another bad problem with idiot builders who obviously don’t have to pass any mechanical or building code in the Phoenix, AZ area… and the idiot residential HVAC companies who just want to make a buck! Here is a video I took with my camera phone to demonstrate how hard it is to climb one of these death traps with just a small toolbag. (You should see it when we have to bring up compressors, tanks, welding supply, and recovery machines!) The homes shown in this video were built by Deitz Crane Builders in the Phoenix, AZ area as well as El Mirage, AZ and some other areas. These are tile rooftops with just enough shingles to allow the Heat Pump to be placed. I usually have to still walk on the tiles on some of the homes. The two story homes are the worst! One reason is because there is a brick wall in between the home and the neighbors yard that only leaves a few feet to place your ladder, which then is going almost straight up. Getting up the ladder is unsafe in itself. Once you climb onto the rooftop, that is surprisingly steep for an area that sees NO SNOW, you have to be careful not to trip over the drain pipe or electrical whip! So this crap is dangerous enough during BROAD DAYLIGHT, but the customer’s expect you to climb this sh*t AFTER DARK because they can’t wait until morning! And many residential HVAC companies like the one in Peoria/Sun City West, AZ expects you to service these units day or night!!!! If you’re thinking

Q&A: Heat pump heating system thermostat?

August 29th, 2010

Question by Charlie: Heat pump heating system thermostat?

We just rescently bought a house that has a heat pump installed i have two questions regarding this heat pump.

Are heat pumps really that more efficient even if its really cold to the point it runs almost all the tine as i am told it may do at times.

Also my ac/heat unit is primary heat pump and has emergency heat backup which are the coils inyou heater. So if the heat pump can’t keep up at a certain point im told the coils intheheater will kick on to help heat the house up and catch up the heat pump or if we wanted we can switch it over to emergency heat which would utilize the coils only andnot thwmore energy efficient heat pump im told.

The current thermostat is very old and i would like to upgrade it to a digital programmable thermostat. Now being that it’s primary heat pump and backup coil heat do i need a multistage compatible heat pump thermostat or a single stage?

Sorry so much information and question it’s mu first heat pump

Answer by KILOWATT
Heat pumps are more efficient, but they start losing efficiency as the temperature drops and at some point the electric heat has to come on. The manufacturer knows what temperature that is. Many people choose to switch over sooner as the discharge air temperature drops to a point where it no longer feels warm when you feel it. If you had a ground source heat pump you would not have that problem. You only need a single stage thermostat, but it must be rated for heat pumps, and also for auxillary heat, both.
