Question by axismiracle: can well water be used for geothermal heating?

It seems like using an open loop system using the already existing well and water in it would be a good cost effective use of the large mass of water 60 ft. below the surface. Couldn’t you constantly circulate it to exchanger for the heat pump? this would be a separate pump from the water supply for the home.please give any and all suggestions.I really want geothermal heat but cant afford the typical installation

Best answer:

Answer by bustersmycat
There are heat exchange systems being used for individual buildings that are more or less doing exactly what you say, relying on the constant temperature of the ground below a certain depth to allow it to serve as a source of heat in winter and a sink for heat in summer.

I believe the Scandinavians have made the most use of this technology and have it pretty well advanced. It isn’t cheap to install. Not all that common in North America yet, although the idea is quite sound.

I am looking to buy a townhouse and the ads keep saying that the heating and cooling system is hydro heat or forced air or heat pump. What are these things? Which one is better in terms of maintanence costs? If it breaks I want to be able to afford to fix it without having to pay with my arms and legs and first born.

Question by Don B: I need help with the wiring on a Hunter thermostat?

I am replacing a white rodgers thermostat with a programmable hunte thermostat and am having trouble with the wiring. I have two sets of wires, one with only a white and red and another with green, red, blue, yellow, and white. This is going on a heat pump unit and when I connect the wires up the heat just keeps running. I do not have any of the wires connected from the two wire line at all, just the 5 wire line.

Best answer:

Answer by happygolucky
I cannot be sure without a lot more details but try this:
Green wire to G
White wire from multi strand to W or W2
Both Red wires to R or RC (with jumper to RH)
White wire from two strand and the Yellow wire to Y
Blue wire to O/B – Only if you are sure this is a heat pump
You may have to select in programming to turn reversing valve on or off during cool or heat. It could also just be a small switch in the tstat. If you know which one great, otherwise, you will have to try both ways. Good luck…

Question by tiny pearl: how much will home value increase if you replace electric heat with a heat pump?

Best answer:

Answer by TitoBob
Yes, because a heat pump costs much less to run than straight electric heat. But you should look into costs of all the materials and labor needed to install the pump, then go to a good real estate company or two and ask them how much they think the home value would increase. If the balance is in your favor by at least 00, then go for the heat pump.
