Question by D Squared: I’ve been told I need 10-11 tons of heat pumps to heat/cool my house but only 4T in geothermal. Is this right?

I live in the Appalachian Mtns. & do not have the temp. extremes. Natural gas is not available, electricity is reasonably priced. My under const. home is 5500 sq. ft on 2 floors 1 of which is a walkout basement that is 1/2 exposed & frame.
I have 9′ ceilings & some vaulted ceilings. I have been told by 3 heat pump companies that I need a 5 ton down & at least a 5 up but two 3 ton units would be better.
I received a quote from a geothermal co. using one 4 ton unit.
One of the heat pump men said that he thinks geo requires twice the tonnage as air source.
The geo man checked R- ratings in the walls & fenestration values from the windows when he made his calculations, the heat pump guys mainly used sq. footage allowing for a well insulated house.
No one else in this area knows about geothermal.
Thanks for your input.

chris.pirillo.com I have never installed a thermostat before, but thanks to the help of several incredible community members, I managed to pull it off without electrocuting myself. Andrew, a long-time member of the LockerGnome community, turned me on to a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat that enables me to control my home air conditioner and furnace by way of a smartphone over the Internet. With the help of an incredibly knowledgeable plumber from AA Plumbing (who happened to have HVAC experience), and teesix (twitter.com from the community, the installation went smoothly. my hvac is not blowing hot air. The outside heat pump unit runs, but no air inside?

January 27th, 2012

Question by : my hvac is not blowing hot air. The outside heat pump unit runs, but no air inside?

The heat pump unit outside is running but the unit inside is not blowing any air in the house. When I checked the air handler in the attic, the circuit board has all the right lights on etc.. and when I reset it, I could hear a humming sound coming from the box next to the blower, but it was not spinning. I tried manually spinning the blower and it kept spinning and worked for a few hours. Now it is not spinning again. I can still hear the humming sound coming from where all the wires are attached in the box next to the blower but no still no air. I need to fix this myself, any suggestions? Could it be the blower itself, or could it be something else such as a capacitor or starter? Any help would be much appreciated!
